What are Dental Fillings?

A dental filling is typically needed when you or a loved one has a cavity. Cavities normally start out being small, but they can get larger the longer they are ignored. A filling helps to stop the spread of decay and ultimately works to save the tooth. You may want or need to have older fillings replaced as they begin to shrink or crack.

Why are Dental Fillings needed?

A dental filling may be necessary if you have one or more cavities. The filling is used to fill in the areas of the tooth that have been compromised by decay. If you have older fillings or want to get rid of metal fillings, we can help to replace these areas with new, tooth-colored options. Our goal is to maintain the health of your teeth using high-quality restorations that are durable and long-lasting.

What makes you a candidate for Dental Fillings?

The majority of our patients who need to have a dental filling placed are able to sit for the procedure. Fillings are ideal for younger and older patients, since only local anesthetic is required. The procedure takes less than a half an hour and multiple fillings can be placed during the same appointment. Fillings are matched perfectly with the rest of your teeth, so you can feel confident in the way your smile looks.

What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?

Dr. Bright will first administer local anesthetic to numb the area. The tooth is then drilled to remove any signs of dental decay. Once the decay has been fully removed, we will prepare the tooth for the filling. This helps the filling material adhere to the tooth and last longer. The composite resin filling is then placed and smoothed out for a more comfortable fit. The material is hardened with a specialized curing light. After the filling has completely cured, you’ll be able to go home and enjoy a healthy, bright smile.
